SFP+ 10G: a multi-vendor guide to choosing the right module

·2 min read·288 words

A 10G SFP+ is not selected by part number alone

SFP+ is a compact transceiver form factor widely used for 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Selection starts with the medium, the actual link distance and the equipment port. The vendor part number comes next because each manufacturer publishes its own supported optics and platform lists.

The main 10G link families

  • 10GBASE-SR: 850 nm over multimode fiber for short optical links.
  • 10GBASE-LR: 1310 nm over single-mode fiber with a nominal reach up to 10 km.
  • 10GBASE-LRM: intended for defined legacy multimode-fiber cases; cabling conditions matter.
  • 10GBASE-ER and ZR: longer single-mode links that require an optical-budget check.
  • DAC and AOC: fixed-length assemblies for short connections explicitly qualified by the equipment vendor.

Common SR and LR manufacturer references

  • Cisco: SFP-10G-SR and SFP-10G-LR.
  • Cisco Meraki: MA-SFP-10GB-SR and MA-SFP-10GB-LR.
  • Juniper: EX-SFP-10GE-SR and EX-SFP-10GE-LR.
  • HPE Aruba Networking: J9150D for SR and J9151E for LR.
  • Fortinet: FN-TRAN-SFP+SR and FN-TRAN-SFP+LR.
  • Palo Alto Networks: PAN-SFP-PLUS-SR and PAN-SFP-PLUS-LR; validate against the firewall model.
  • WatchGuard: WG8583 is documented as a 10GBASE-SR optic for specified Firebox models.

Five checks before ordering

  • Record the exact switch, router, server or firewall model.
  • Record the port type and any network module or line card.
  • Measure the distance and identify the installed fiber.
  • Select SR, LR, ER, DAC or AOC based on the physical link.
  • Validate the final part number in the manufacturer compatibility documentation.

What to include in an OPTINOC quote request

Provide the host equipment, network module or port, distance, fiber type, connector and quantity. OPTINOC can then select the relevant original-manufacturer reference without creating a separate catalog page for every reach or wavelength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which 10G SFP+ should I use for a short link?

For a short optical link over multimode fiber, select a 10GBASE-SR module qualified for the host equipment. The exact reach depends on the installed fiber grade.

Which module is normally used for a 10 km link?

10GBASE-LR over single-mode fiber is normally specified for a nominal reach of up to 10 km. Support must still be checked for the exact device and port.

Are SR modules from different vendors interchangeable?

They may implement the same optical standard without being interchangeable. Host coding, firmware, power and the vendor compatibility list must also be checked.
