How to choose a 10G SFP by distance, fiber and equipment
Step 1: start with the host equipment
Record the complete part number at each end. On modular equipment, also record the network module or line card because the same chassis can expose different port capabilities depending on the installed module.
Step 2: identify the installed medium
- OM1, OM2, OM3 or OM4 multimode fiber: normally considered with 10GBASE-SR for short links.
- OS1 or OS2 single-mode fiber: normally considered with LR, ER, ZR, BiDi or WDM optics.
- No installed fiber on a very short link: compare DAC, AOC and separate optical modules.
Step 3: measure the real path
Include installed routing, patch leads and patch panels. With older fiber, its declared grade and connector condition matter as much as distance. Jacket color alone is not sufficient evidence.
Step 4: select the optical family
- SR for a short multimode link within the published limits.
- LR for a single-mode link up to the module’s nominal 10 km limit.
- ER or ZR when required by distance and confirmed by an optical-budget calculation.
- BiDi for one-fiber links using a complementary Tx/Rx pair.
- DAC or AOC for short links qualified by the host vendor.
Step 5: select the manufacturer part number
After selecting the optical family, choose the host-qualified reference: for example Cisco SFP-10G-SR, Meraki MA-SFP-10GB-SR, Juniper EX-SFP-10GE-SR or HPE Aruba J9150D. They serve a comparable optical purpose but support remains equipment-specific.
