Hotel and Hospitality Wi-Fi: Design and Monetization
Hospitality WiFi is a critical consideration: 89% of guests say WiFi influences their choice of hotel (Hotels.com 2024 study). Requirements: 100% coverage (guest rooms, hallways, restaurant, spa), premium bandwidth (4K Netflix/Disney+ streaming), guest/staff/IoT segmentation, and room-number authentication. 2026 hotel guide.
Business requirements
- Bandwidth per room: 50-100 Mbps per simultaneously connected device (4K streaming + videoconferencing)
- Density: 3-5 devices per room (smartphones, laptops, TV, assistants)
- Coverage: guest rooms + hallways + spa + restaurant + conference facilities + parking
- Authentication: captive portal using room number + name, or PMS integration
- Segmentation: staff, guests, IoT (IP TV, building automation)
- SLA: 99.9% (maximum 8h downtime/year, including peak seasons)
Per-room AP architecture
Option 1: AP in the hallway
- 1 AP per 2-4 rooms, depending on wall materials
- Hallway ceiling AP: Aruba AP-635, Cisco CW9164, Ruckus R770
- Less hardware, but poorer penetration through building materials → reduced in-room bandwidth
Option 2: Wall-plate AP in each room (recommended for 4-5-star hotels)
- 1 AP in each room (behind the bed or on the desk)
- Aruba AP-22D, Cisco IW9165 Wall-Plate, Juniper AP12 Wall
- Additional Ethernet ports for TV, printer, and IP phone
- Optimal in-room bandwidth, but 2-3× more APs
Option 3: Combined hallway + wall-plate deployment
- Wall-plate APs in premium suites
- Hallway APs in standard/economy areas
- Cost/service trade-off
PMS Integration
The Property Management System (Opera, Mews, Cloudbeds) integrates with the WiFi network to provide:
- Automatic user creation at check-in
- Automatic expiration at check-out
- Premium WiFi billing (€10/night upsell for 100 Mbps bandwidth)
- Login: room number + last name
Leading hospitality vendors

Segmentation
- VLAN 10: STAFF (corporate WiFi + wired network)
- VLAN 20: GUESTS (per-room isolation via PVLAN)
- VLAN 30: IoT TVs (Chromecast, SmartCast)
- VLAN 40: Building automation (thermostats, digital keys)
- VLAN 50: CCTV (IP cameras)
- VLAN 99: MGMT
Security
- WPA3-SAE for staff + 802.1X
- WPA2/WPA3 + captive portal for guests
- Guest client isolation: no inter-room P2P traffic
- Firewall: FortiGate 100F/200F depending on property size
- Minimum 1-year log retention (LCEN, French legal requirements)
