How to Choose a Cisco Firepower Firewall

Cisco Secure Firewall: the Sourcefire legacy

Cisco Secure Firewall—formerly Firepower and, before that, ASA NGFW—is Cisco's next-generation firewall product line. It combines the legacy ASA (Adaptive Security Appliance) firewall engine with the Snort 3 IPS engine acquired through Cisco's purchase of Sourcefire in 2013. The entire platform runs on FTD (Firepower Threat Defense), the unified OS introduced in 2017.

An honest assessment in 2026: Cisco ranks #3 in the global NGFW market, behind Palo Alto and Fortinet according to Gartner. The product is robust but has three shortcomings: deployment complexity, with a steeper learning curve than FortiOS; lower performance than Fortinet at an equivalent price point, due to the lack of a dedicated ASIC; and fragmented management across FMC, FDM, and CDO. That said, for all-Cisco organizations with in-house CCNP/CCIE expertise, the ecosystem—SecureX, Umbrella, Duo, and Talos—remains a compelling advantage.

1000 Series: SMBs and branch offices

• Firepower 4125: 40 Gbps FW / 18 Gbps Threat. Price: ~€50,000 excluding tax.
• Firepower 4145: 55 Gbps FW / 25 Gbps Threat. Price: ~€70,000 excluding tax.
• Firepower 9300: modular chassis supporting up to 250 Gbps. For MSSPs and service providers. Price: €150K+.

FTD vs ASA: which OS to choose

Firepower appliances support a choice of 2 operating systems:

• ASA (Adaptive Security Appliance): Cisco's legacy OS. Stateful firewall + IPsec/SSL VPN. No native NGFW capabilities; IPS is optional through a separate Firepower module. Traditional Cisco CLI. Stable and well documented, but a legacy platform.
• FTD (Firepower Threat Defense): the modern unified OS. It combines ASA with Snort IPS. Managed through the Firepower Device Manager (FDM) interface or centrally through Firepower Management Center (FMC). Recommended for all new deployments.
• ASA → FTD migration: use the Cisco Secure Firewall Migration Tool. Allow 2-4 weeks for a properly executed enterprise migration.

Management: FMC vs FDM vs CDO

Cisco's longstanding weakness: 3 management options that are not interchangeable.

• FDM (Firepower Device Manager): a web interface embedded in the firewall. Designed to manage a single Firepower appliance. Simple and suitable for SMBs with 1-2 firewalls. Limitations: no multi-site management, no templates, and no advanced features.
• FMC (Firepower Management Center): a physical appliance (FMC-1600, FMC-2600, FMC-4600) or VM. Manages up to 750 Firepower appliances. Feature-rich, with templates, workflows, and analytics. HOWEVER: it is resource-intensive and expensive—a physical FMC costs €15K+—and has a steep learning curve. Essential for more than 5 firewalls.
• CDO (Cisco Defense Orchestrator): cloud-managed SaaS. Manages Firepower, ASA, and Meraki through a single interface. Modern, but it does not cover every advanced FTD use case. Adoption is growing, making it worth monitoring for 2027+.

Cisco Secure Firewall licensing

Cisco's licensing model is notoriously complex. There are three main tiers:

• Threat: Snort IPS + AV + File Analysis. Equivalent to Fortinet UTP. ~40% of the hardware price per year.
• URL Filtering: category-based web filtering. Separate license (!). ~10% of the hardware price per year.
• Malware: Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) with cloud sandboxing. Equivalent to Fortinet ATP. ~20% of the hardware price per year.
• Complete Threat + URL + Malware bundle: ~70% of the hardware price per year. It is expensive. Very expensive.
• Important: many features require separate DNA or SecureX subscriptions. Always calculate the 5-year TCO before making a commitment.

When to choose Firepower—and when to avoid it

Choose Firepower if:

• Your entire team holds Cisco certifications (CCNP/CCIE Security).
• Your network is entirely Cisco-based (Catalyst, Nexus, ASR), and you want SecureX integration.
• You already have—or plan to deploy—a Cisco Talos SOC.
• You operate in a sector where Cisco is mandated, such as defense or government.

Avoid Firepower if:

• You want the best value for money: FortiGate significantly outperforms Cisco in this area.
• Your team has broad, generalist skills: Fortinet is easier to learn and operate.
• Your licensing budget is tight: Cisco licenses cost ~70% of the hardware price per year, compared with ~40% for Fortinet.
• You need SD-WAN: Cisco requires Viptela under a separate license, while Fortinet includes it in FortiOS.

Alternative: ASA 5500-X (legacy but still viable)

For organizations with limited budgets that require Cisco, used or end-of-stock ASA 5500-X appliances remain viable for stateful firewalling + basic VPN, without advanced NGFW capabilities. The ASA 5516-X and ASA 5525-X remain supported through 2027-2028. Used price: €500-2,000, compared with €3-8K for a new Firepower appliance.
