Cisco Nexus: 2026 data center guide
The Cisco Nexus portfolio is Cisco's family of data center switches, distinct from Catalyst (NX-OS vs IOS-XE). It is optimized for low latency, high-density 100G/400G connectivity, hardware-based VXLAN EVPN, and Cisco ACI. Complete 2026 Nexus portfolio guide.
Nexus 9000: the core of the modern data center portfolio
Nexus 9200
- Cloud Scale ASIC, fixed configuration
- N9K-C92160YC-X: 48×10G + 6×100G — €18,900 excl. VAT
- Target: entry-level data centers and simple ToR deployments
Nexus 9300 (most widely deployed)
- See the dedicated data sheet. EX/FX/GX models for 25/100/400G
- ACI leaf or standalone NX-OS
- Cisco's best-selling data center switch
Nexus 9500 (modular)
- 4-, 8-, and 16-slot chassis
- 10/25/40/100/400G line cards
- From the N9K-SUP-A+ supervisor (2 Tbps) to the N9K-SUP-B+ (3.6 Tbps)
- Role: spine in an ACI/VXLAN fabric or data center core
Nexus 3000 / 3100 / 3200: entry-level
- Designed for ISPs, HPC, and low-latency trading
- Sub-µs latency (cut-through)
- Fewer EVPN/VXLAN features than the 9300
Nexus 7000 / 7700 (legacy)
- Large chassis (9/10/18 slots)
- End-of-Sale 2022, End-of-Support 2027
- Do not purchase: choose the Nexus 9500 instead
Nexus Dashboard vs DCNM
Cisco DCNM (Data Center Network Manager) has been replaced by Nexus Dashboard:
- Nexus Dashboard Fabric Controller: VXLAN fabric orchestration
- Nexus Dashboard Insights: analytics and flow telemetry
- Nexus Dashboard Orchestrator: multi-fabric synchronization (Multi-Site)
Standalone NX-OS vs ACI modes
- Standalone NX-OS: traditional CLI with manual VXLAN EVPN configuration
- ACI (Application Centric Infrastructure): APIC controllers with contract and tenant abstraction
- ACI requires 3× APIC-L3 (€25,000 excl. VAT each) plus ACI licenses for each switch (€5,000)
Typical use cases
- Entry-level data center with 50 servers: 2× Nexus 93180YC-FX leaf switches (standalone NX-OS)
- Mid-sized data center with 200 servers: VXLAN EVPN fabric with 2 spine and 4 leaf switches
- Large data center with 1,000+ servers: ACI fabric with 4 spine switches, 16 leaf switches, 3 APIC controllers, and multi-site connectivity
- HPC/trading: low-latency Nexus 3232C
Alternatives
- Arista 7050X3/7060X4: well-regarded EOS, with lower licensing costs
- Juniper QFX5120: highly streamlined EVPN-VXLAN with strong Apstra integration
- Mellanox/NVIDIA SN3700: ideal for AI/ML with RoCEv2
