The GLC-EX-SMD is a Cisco 1 Gbps SFP module designed for long-range links over single-mode fiber, with a reach of 40 kilometers via an LC (UPC) connector on a duplex cable. Compliant with the IEEE 1000BASE-EX standard, it benefits from an extended temperature range of -5 to 85°C, making it suitable for environments less controlled than standard server rooms. This compact SFP format fits into any Cisco device with a 1G SFP slot.

The GLC-EX-SMD is recommended for establishing Gigabit links between sites 40 km apart — substation connections, industrial supervision links, or rural backhaul — in installations where resistance to extreme temperatures is required.
