Juniper Apstra: intent-based fabric automation

·2 min read·338 words

Juniper Apstra is Juniper's intent-based data center automation solution, acquired in 2021. Uniquely multi-vendor, it automates EVPN-VXLAN fabrics across Juniper, Cisco, Arista, SONiC and Mellanox. Blueprint architecture with continuous validation. An alternative to Cisco ACI, VMware NSX and Nokia SR Linux. Complete 2026 guide.

Intent-based concept

Instead of configuring each switch individually through the CLI, you define the intent: “I want a fabric with 2 spine and 4 leaf switches, with VLAN DB accessible only from VLAN APP and a VTEP on each leaf.” Apstra translates this into configurations and pushes them to the devices.

Architecture

  • Apstra Controller: central VM (VMware/KVM), GUI and API
  • Apstra Agents: CLI/SNMP connectivity to Juniper/Cisco/Arista/SONiC switches
  • Blueprint: fabric model with racks, links and policies
  • Continuous validation: Apstra continuously monitors the network against the defined intent
  • Root Cause Identification: AI quickly identifies the cause of an outage

Multi-vendor support

  • Juniper QFX5120/5130/5200 (native)
  • Cisco Nexus 9300-EX/FX/GX (agent)
  • Arista 7050X3/7060X4 (agent)
  • SONiC (Microsoft open NOS)
  • NVIDIA Cumulus/Mellanox
  • Roadmap: Dell Z9100, Cisco 8000

Key features

  • Visual blueprint design with drag-and-drop racks
  • Pre-commit validation: impact simulation before deployment
  • Time Voyager: rollback to any previous state
  • Extensible: webhooks, Terraform provider and REST API
  • Custom probes: Python scripts for business-specific validation
  • Multi-tenant fabric topology with security zones

Pricing

  • Apstra Controller license: €15,000 excl. VAT (10 switches) to €150,000 excl. VAT (500 switches)
  • Per switch: €500-1,500 excl. VAT/year
  • No hardware required (VM)

Comparison

  • Cisco ACI: Cisco-only, requires an APIC controller, with more expensive licenses
  • VMware NSX: hypervisor-centric and not ideal for physical network fabrics
  • Nokia SR Linux + EDA: Nokia-only, a recent competitor
  • Nautobot: open-source IPAM and source of truth, without direct configuration automation

Use cases

  • Migration from Cisco ACI to a multi-vendor environment (Juniper and Cisco coexistence)
  • Greenfield DC requiring intent-based networking without vendor lock-in
  • Multi-DC environments with heterogeneous infrastructure (e.g., existing Cisco equipment and new Juniper equipment)
  • Audit compliance: continuous validation trail
