Industrial Switch for Harsh Environments
Why Choose an Industrial Switch Rather Than a Commercial Switch?
A commercial switch (Catalyst 9300, EX4400, CX 6300) is designed for a climate-controlled office environment: temperatures of 0-40°C, controlled humidity, no vibration, and no dust. Install a Catalyst 9300 in a production workshop at 55°C, on a vibrating column next to a hydraulic press, with metal dust in the air—and it will fail within 6 months. The fans become clogged, the capacitors fail, and the connectors corrode.
An industrial switch is designed to survive these extreme conditions. IP30 to IP67 certification, an operating temperature range of -40°C to +75°C, a fanless metal enclosure (natural convection), 24VDC power (the industrial standard, not 220V), DIN rail mounting (rather than a 19-inch rack), and resistance to vibration and shock (IEC 61850-3, IEEE 1613). The upfront cost is 2 to 5× higher than for a commercial switch, but the TCO over 10-15 years is lower—no premature replacement, no fan maintenance, and no production downtime.
Industrial Switch Market Leaders
Cisco IE-3400 / IE-4000 / IE-5000
Cisco leads the industrial switch market with its IE (Industrial Ethernet) portfolio. The IE-3400 is the most widely deployed model—it combines the IOS-XE capabilities of the Catalyst platform with a ruggedized industrial enclosure.
- IE-3400-8T2S (IE-3400-8T2S-A): 8× 1G copper ports + 2× 1G SFP uplinks. Fanless, -40°C/+75°C, DIN rail/wall mounting. IP30. OPTINOC price: ~€3,500 excluding VAT.
- IE-3400-8P2S: PoE+ version (8× 30W ports, 240W budget). Designed to power cameras and sensors in the factory. Price: ~€4,500 excluding VAT.
- IE-4000-8GT4G-E: 8× 1G copper ports + 4× SFP combo ports. For more demanding environments. Price: ~€5,500 excluding VAT.
- IE-5000-16S12P: 16× 1G SFP ports + 12× 1G PoE+ ports. For high-density industrial backbones. Price: ~€8,000 excluding VAT.
- IOS-XE: the same commands as the Catalyst 9300. Compatible with DNA/SD-Access (industrial segmentation).
- Cisco Cyber Vision: integrated OT monitoring to detect anomalies in SCADA protocols.
Hirschmann (Belden)—RSP / GREYHOUND / SPIDER
Hirschmann is the long-established benchmark among European automation specialists and OT integrators. A German brand within the Belden Group, Hirschmann switches are designed by industrial engineers rather than IT engineers—the philosophy is different: absolute reliability, zero configuration for simple use cases, and support for industrial ring topologies (MRP, HSR, PRP).
- RSP25: 8× Fast Ethernet + 1× GbE combo. MRP ring (<50ms failover). -40°C/+70°C. Price: ~€1,200 excluding VAT.
- RSP35: 8× GbE + 4× GbE SFP. Ring/star topology. Static L3 routing. Price: ~€2,500 excluding VAT.
- GREYHOUND 1040: 10× GbE + 4× SFP. NAT, basic firewall, DHCP. For industrial DMZs. Price: ~€3,000 excluding VAT.
- SPIDER III SL: compact unmanaged industrial switch. 5-8 Fast Ethernet ports. For small sensor clusters. Price: ~€200-400 excluding VAT.
- Hirschmann advantage: HiOS (proprietary OS) is extremely stable—MTBF >500,000 hours. Native MRP/HSR/PRP support for industrial ring redundancy.
Moxa—EDS / ICS
Moxa is Taiwan's leading industrial networking vendor. It has a strong presence in Asia and in the energy and transportation sectors. Moxa switches are known for their ruggedness and value for money.
- EDS-408A: 8× managed Fast Ethernet. -40°C/+75°C. Turbo Ring (<20ms failover). Price: ~€600 excluding VAT.
- EDS-G4008: 8× managed GbE. Price: ~€1,200 excluding VAT.
- ICS-G7752A: 48× GbE + 4× 10G SFP+. Rack-mount industrial switch. For factory backbones. Price: ~€6,000 excluding VAT.
- Moxa advantage: a broad portfolio (from a 5-port micro switch priced at €50 to a 48-port backbone switch), with marine (DNV), railway (EN 50155), and ATex (hazardous areas) certifications.
Aruba CX 6200 Fanless / Catalyst 9200 Rugged
For semi-industrial environments (warehouses, light-duty workshops, and non-climate-controlled equipment cabinets), fanless versions of campus switches may be sufficient:
- Aruba CX 6200F-24G: 24× 1G ports, fanless, 0-50°C. For non-climate-controlled equipment cabinets. Price: ~€2,000 excluding VAT.
- Juniper EX2300-C-12P: 12× 1G PoE+ ports, compact and fanless. For offices or small space-constrained environments. Price: ~€1,800 excluding VAT.
- Cisco IE-3300 (Catalyst IE): ruggedized version of the Catalyst 9300. Not as hardened as the IE-3400, but it provides full IOS-XE functionality.
Supported Industrial Protocols
- Profinet (Siemens): real-time protocol for Siemens automation. Industrial switches must be Profinet CC-A or CC-B certified. The Cisco IE-3400 and Hirschmann RSP are certified.
- EtherNet/IP (Rockwell): CIP protocol over TCP/UDP. Allen-Bradley Stratix (based on Cisco IE) is the native switch platform. The Cisco IE-3400 supports CIP.
- Modbus TCP: legacy SCADA protocol over TCP port 502. Supported by all industrial switches (no special certification is required because it uses standard TCP).
- OPC UA: modern standardized protocol for Industry 4.0. It uses standard TCP and has no specific switch requirements.
- MRP (Media Redundancy Protocol): ring topology with <50ms failover. Hirschmann and Siemens are the benchmark vendors.
- PRP/HSR (Parallel Redundancy Protocol / High-availability Seamless Redundancy): 0ms failover. For critical applications in sectors such as energy and transportation. Supported by the Hirschmann GREYHOUND and Cisco IE-5000.
Standards and Certifications
- IEC 61850-3: standard for electrical substation equipment (EMC, temperature, vibration).
