The BGP Edge Router: The Heart of an ISP Network
A regional ISP (10K-100K customers) has three types of mission-critical routers: the peering router, which carries the full Internet BGP table (~950K IPv4 routes + 200K IPv6 routes); the PE (Provider Edge) router, which terminates MPLS L3VPN customer connections; and the core router, which handles internal backbone traffic and aggregation. Some platforms combine all 3 roles; large service providers use dedicated equipment for each role.
Supporting the full Internet table, customer routes, and MPLS overhead requires at least 8 GB of router RAM, with 16-32 GB recommended. Enterprise routers such as the Catalyst 8500 or ISR lack the RAM and forwarding processors required for this workload. Service-provider routers are required: Juniper MX, Cisco ASR 9000, or Nokia 7750.

- ASR 9904: 4-slot chassis, 4 Tbps. Comparable to the MX480. Price: €100-200K.
- IOS-XR is extremely powerful but, for most engineers, more complex to master than Junos.
Nokia 7750 SR: A European Alternative
The Nokia 7750 SR is Nokia's service-provider router portfolio (formerly Alcatel-Lucent). It has a strong presence in Europe, particularly among traditional telecommunications carriers. Its robust SR OS architecture provides strong MPLS and Segment Routing support.

- 7750 SR-7/SR-12: modular chassis for large-scale deployments.
- Consider this platform if you already use Nokia equipment in your backbone or have a Nokia framework agreement.
Full BGP Table: Sizing the Platform Correctly
- Internet table size in 2026: ~950K IPv4 routes + 200K IPv6 routes = ~1.15M routes.
- Required RAM: minimum 8 GB for 1 full BGP feed, or 16-32 GB for multiple peers and services.
- FIB entries: the router must be capable of programming 1M+ entries into the hardware FIB.
- Convergence: after a reboot, loading the full table while handling moderate route flapping takes 5-15 minutes, depending on the platform.
