QoS (Quality of Service) encompasses the techniques used to prioritize critical network traffic, such as voice and video. Without QoS, a backup can saturate the WAN and disrupt your Teams calls. It is essential for VoIP, ERP, and video conferencing.
DiffServ Model
IETF standard based on DSCP (6 bits in the IP header):
- EF (46): VoIP, expedited forwarding
- AF41 (34): interactive video
- AF21 (18): ERP, CRM
- AF11 (10): bulk data
- CS0 (0): best effort
Mechanisms
- Classification: identify traffic (ACL, NBAR)
- Marking: set DSCP
- Policing: limit input traffic
- Shaping: smooth output traffic
- Queuing: schedule traffic (LLQ, CBWFQ)
- WRED: proactive packet dropping
